Media Release – Residential Structure Fire

May 24, 2026

At approximately 09:07 hours on May 23rd, 2026, the Barnard Fire District received a 911 call reporting a house fire at 186 Bancroft Drive in the Town of Greece. The first arriving fire unit reached the scene at 09:09 hours, confirming a working fire in a two-story residential home with active fire on both the first and second floors.

While responding, crews from Barnard, Ridge Road, and North Greece Fire Districts were updated reports of three individuals reported to be trapped inside the residence. Upon arrival, fire crews immediately initiated rescue operations and conducted primary and secondary searches throughout the home.

Firefighters located two victims on the second floor and successfully removed them from the structure. Additional mutual aid was requested, bringing resources from the Lake Shore, St. Paul, Irondequoit, and Henrietta Fire Districts to assist with suppression, search operations, and scene support.

Monroe Ambulance responded with ambulances and transported three critically injured patients to Strong Memorial Hospital. Tragically, two of the victims have since succumbed to their injuries. A third victim remains in the burn unit receiving critical care. A total of six individuals were inside the home at the time of the fire.

The Monroe County Fire Bureau is actively investigating the origin and cause of the fire. No additional information is available at this time.

The Barnard Fire District extends its deepest condolences to the affected family and thanks all responding agencies for their rapid and coordinated efforts during this challenging incident.

Finally, the District urges all residents to check their smoke detectors regularly, ensure they are operating properly, and confirm that at least one smoke detector is installed on each level of the home. Working smoke detectors save lives. Any resident of Barnard is welcome to contact the Fire Station, and we will assist you with installing a smoke detector, if you need help.
