The Barnard Fire Explorer Post is
a program offered through the
cooperation of the Boy Scouts
of America Exploring program. Young
adults ages 14 to 21 can be part of a
program that teaches the foundation
of fire fighting and emergency medical
service while having fun!
Along with monthly meetings and
training classes the Barnard Explorers
participate in field trips. This year
they have toured the City of Rochester
Fire Department and Coast Guard Station.
The kids have had guest speakers
come in to talk about Fire Investigation
by the Greece Police and have scheduled
a speaker from the DEA to come
in and speak on drug enforcement.
If your child goes to a Greece
school, exploring can earn credits toward
their graduation. Some of our explorers
have also used their time with
Barnard toward their Participation in
Government curriculum.
In April one of our Explorers, Justin
Dewaal, was honored at the Fire
Department Banquet as Explorer of
the Year. Justin is attending MCC and
is continuing in exploring until he can
join a volunteer Fire Department. Justin
has been a mentor for new exploring
scouts and is an active participant
in our program. Justin exemplifies the
ideals of exploring and is an asset to
the program and Fire Department.
The Barnard Fire Explorer Post invites
both young adults and their parents
to come visit our program. We
meet the first and third Tuesdays, of
each month, at the Barnard Fire Department.
We welcome you to come
and experience exploring!

The Barnard Explorer Post 507 started in
1969, and was officially the second such post in Monroe County.
The original post consisted of 10 to 12 people, and was headed
by two Barnard Firefighters, Edward Fenner, and Henry Koster.
Our current post has about 15 active members. You have to be
between the ages of 14 and 21 to join, our meeting nights are
the first Tuesday of the month and we have a drill on the third
Tuesday. We have all of our meetings and drills at the Fire House
which is located at 3084 Dewey Ave. and they start at 7:00pm
on both nights.
The Explorers are encouraged
to attend the departments monthly drills, march in parades,
and do
ride a long with
the paid staff after
completion of required
training. The post
helps the fireman
at calls by changing
their air bottles,
setting up a station
with water, spare
air bottles, and
tools they may need.
Barnard is also taking
part in MCFEA (Monroe
County Fire Explorers
Association). There
all the Monroe County
Fire Explorers come
together to talk
about what each post
is doing and what
we as a whole want
to do! We also have
a competition at
the end of the meeting
on a drill that the
host post picks out,
we all compete for
the axe. The axe
is the prize that
you get when you
win the drill, you
put your name on
the axe and bring
it back to the next
meeting where you
will hopefully win
it again. On March
13, 2003 the meeting
was at Walker Fire
Department and the
competition was for
back boarding. At
this meeting the
Barnard Explorer
Post won the axe!
The MCFEA meetings
are once every two
months.
With
explorers you can
get credit for school,
make lots of friends
and have a great
experience most kids
don't get to have!
Once an Explorer
has reached the age
of 18 and has completed
high school, they
are eligible to join
the Fire Department
if desired. The average
turn over rate from
Explorer to Firefighter
is 75%. If you have
any questions or
want more information
E-mail us at explorer@barnardfire.org , and we will get
back to you as soon
as possible with
the answers to your
questions! |
